Green-Fleshed Prickly Pear
Opuntia ficus-indica
Prickly pear are consumed widely as food. The fruits are widely commercialized in many parts of the world, eaten raw, and have one of the highest concentrations of vitamin C of any fruit. Plus they are delicious! The leaves are cooked and eaten as a vegetable known as nopalitos, which can be sliced into strips, skinned or unskinned, and fried with eggs and jalapeños, served as a breakfast treat. The fruits can be boiled, used raw, blended with fruit juice, or made into jams and jellies. This green-fleshed variety is the sweetest of the colors we offer. Drought tolerant.
