Babaco

Vasconcellea x heilbornii

Sometimes called champagne fruit or mountain papaya (referring to its close kin), babaco is native to Ecuador and is the most cold tolerant species of the Vasconcellea genus. The seedless fruit is tart and tropically sweet at the same time, with a flavour likened to that of strawberry, passionfruit, or papaya. Its beautiful broad leaves flaunt its exotic origin and will brighten up the garden with the look and taste of the tropics.
