West African Basil

Ocimum viride

This basil is used throughout Africa for fevers, including those induced by malaria. With a scent and flavour similar to thyme, it is a popular general tonic and remedy for diarrhea, and also used to repel insects. Leaf oil is highly antiseptic due to its thymol content, which explains its use as a gargle, dressing for wounds, and treatment for conjunctivitis.
