Green Malabar Spinach
Basella alba
Its thick, semi-succulent, heart-shaped leaves have a mild flavour and mucilaginous texture and are best used as a cooked green. It is rich in Vitamins A and C, Iron and Calcium, and has antioxidant properties. Malabar spinach can be found at many Asian supermarkets and farmer’s markets.
Water: Likes water and humidity
Hardiness: Tropical, frost tender. A good plant to grow in a greenhouse, but can over Winter in a protected place with good drainage.
Habit: An edible perennial 10’+ vine
Light: Full Sun
Soil: Sandy loam soils rich in organic matter
Origin: Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia and New Guinea
