Turmeric

Cucurma longa

This plant is most noted for its rhizomes which are the source of the bright, yellow-orange, powdery spice known as turmeric. Turmeric has a number of well-known uses including culinary, dye, and medicinal (purportedly helps relieve pain, clean wounds, lower blood pressure, and treat liver ailments). Leaves are also sometimes used for wrapping and cooking food.

Water: Can grow in wet soil

Hardiness: Will die back to rhizomes and resprout in the Spring

Habit: 4' tall by 4' wide

Light: Best with morning sun and some afternoon shade. Likes hot Summers and high humidity.

Soil: Loose well-draining soil high in organic matter

Origin: Tropical Southwestern India
